This story is a little gem.
E 'a succession of paragraphs in which you recount episodes from the life of the protagonist as a parent and others which tells its efforts as an expert in linguistics to translate the language of an alien race in a situation of first contact.
Initially this seems to be purely a stylistic choice, but soon realizes that it is instead an integral part of the story. The very fact
themes reminiscent of those Babel-17 by Samuel Delany: The effects of language on the human mind and its ability to perceive the world. The way in which the author plays with the narrative structure resembles Delany.
Also notable is the opposite level of empathy that the two types of paragraphs forward. While those dedicated to the aliens are rigorous, ascetic, those dedicated to the daughter of the protagonist are very human, emotional, often moving.
If, like me, have always considered the magic of Star Terk Universal Translator as one of the biggest nonsense ever seen in science fiction field, then just read this story.

Fusilli with zucchini and shrimp

Here is the recipe for zucchini pasta and shrimp in my own way. Recipe developed after years of experimentation on human subjects:-D

Ingredients (3 / 4 persons):

• 1 / 2 leek
• 300g prawns
• 2 egg yolks
• 1 / 2 cup milk
• 1 zucchini
• 350g fusilli
• 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Preparation Slice the leek and fry in 2 tablespoons of oil. Add the zucchini, cut into half rings. Cook for few minutes. Add the peeled shrimp, cook for a while. Season with salt and pepper and remove from heat.
In a bowl mix the egg yolks with milk, salt, pepper and lemon zest.
Cook pasta, drain (but not too much) and let it jump into the frying pan of shrimp. Remove from heat, add the milk mixture and eggs and mix well. The egg should be creamy, like a carbonara.

was for some who do not appreciate so much a novel. Where to "enjoy" I mean find myself sipping the pages, do not force me to read more than one chapter a day because I do not want the book to end.

The novel's more political Mieville. It has everything: a social movement, clandestine newspapers (the legendary Runagate Rampant ), a railway workers in revolt that eventually ownership of the train so they are building the tracks. Rails will continue to build, destroy them immediately after the passage of the stolen train, on a trip / desperate escape leads them to become legend, a symbol of social struggle against the oppressive government of the city-state of New Crobuzon.

Significant chapters of the stain cacotopica, an area subject to a fracture of the fact that warps and distorts everything that enters it. All cleverly mixed with more familiar elements, taken from our reality quitidiana: factories, trains, accountants, corporations moved by the spirit of capitalism, in a dark-toned mix steampunk. The sites in New Crobuzon seem to have the names of the districts of London distorted by a perverse fantasy. Howl Barrow, Badside, Glasshouse, Dog Fenn, Smog Bend, Cockscom Bridge, Brock Marsh. The effect is nothing short of alienating the most positive sense of the term, as able to create that "sense of wonder" that every player like that look fantastic. The term weird fiction could not be more appropriate.

Everything is described with elaborate style, baroque, yet surprisingly direct, vivid and effective. Even better than he showed in Mieville Perdido Street Station (no mean feat).
