This story is a little gem. E 'a succession of paragraphs in which you recount episodes from the life of the protagonist as a parent and others which tells its efforts as an expert in linguistics to translate the language of an alien race in a situation of first contact.
Initially this seems to be purely a stylistic choice, but soon realizes that it is instead an integral part of the story. The very fact
themes reminiscent of those Babel-17 by Samuel Delany: The effects of language on the human mind and its ability to perceive the world. The way in which the author plays with the narrative structure resembles Delany.
Also notable is the opposite level of empathy that the two types of paragraphs forward. While those dedicated to the aliens are rigorous, ascetic, those dedicated to the daughter of the protagonist are very human, emotional, often moving.
If, like me, have always considered the magic of Star Terk Universal Translator as one of the biggest nonsense ever seen in science fiction field, then just read this story.
